RIM boss Also use the Samsung Galaxy S III

RIM Boss

What comes to mind when a leader of the company would use another company's production of goods which is a rival? Of course some people think that leadership is less sure of its own production of goods. But unlike the head of Research in Motion (RIM) on this one.

Thorsten Heins, CEO of RIM is one company leader who also uses the products of rivals. Not only using the BlackBerry (the production company itself), he also uses mobile competitors, Samsung Galaxy S III. But this does not mean he is not sure of its own products, he had other plans.

Just as a strategy in the war. Fighters must know the capabilities and weak points of the opponent before plunging into battle. Heins use competitor products to understand the capabilities and to find out how to defeat it. In an interview he said the following:

'Yes, I absolutely do (use a BlackBerry), however, just to stay educated about the market, I always have a second device That is a competitor device so I know where I am, in terms of the competition,' Thorsten Heins, RIM CEO.

'I'm definitely using the BlackBerry. To study the development of the market, I always have a second device (other than BlackBerry), namely from the competition. So I know the position and conditions of the competition, "said Thorsten Heins, CEO of RIM.

AT&T's Samsung Galaxy Note Getting Android OS Upgrade Tomorrow

Those who have a Samsung Galaxy Note from AT&T have something to look forward to: an upgrade to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) for this super-size smartphone is going to be released on Tuesday.

Samsung Galaxy NoteIn some ways this will be a significant upgrade, but not in all ways. Samsung has layered its TouchWiz user interface on top of the standard Android one, and this isn't being updated, so the general look of the UI isn't going to change. Still, things like Android Beam will be enabled.

And once this upgrade is installed Galaxy Note users will have access to a "Premium Suite" that offers a handful of extra features. This includes S Note, a unique tool that lets users combine notes and sketches with other digital content that can be easily shared. It also includes features such as Shape Match, which helps correct and digitalize geometric shapes, Formula Match, which helps solve numeric formulas that were hand-drawn with the S Pen, and My Story, an app designed to create personalized cards.

The upgrade to Android 4.0 for the Samsung Galaxy Note will start being distributed tomorrow, July 10. The Premium Suite will be available as a download from the Google Play app store after this upgrade has been installed.

And be sure to read our review of the Galaxy Note.

Ice Cream Sandwich update for AT&T's Samsung Galaxy S II delayed for technical reasons

Last night, it seems that word had slipped out that the Android 4.0 update was available for the AT&T version of the Samsung Galaxy S II via Kies. Unfortunately, it turned out that the update was available only for a limited time. For those unfamiliar with the process, Kies allows users to connect their Samsung-made device with a PC or Mac using a USB cable. One use of Kies is to install software updates such as Android 4.0 as an alternative to an OTA update.
So why was the Android 4.0 first made available and then apparently pulled? One AT&T customer decided to discuss the matter with an AT&T rep via a Live Chat. And during this chat, the rep said that the update has been delayed due to "Technical Reasons". There is some speculation from Samsung and AT&T reps that the update will be attempted again this coming Saturday, but during the Live Chat, the rep said that he/she had no new details because the update was still in the process of being tested.
Some who managed to download the update before it was pulled are complaining about lag, which might be why the update was pulled to begin with. Those with the device can wait until Saturday and see if they have the opportunity to try again.

Samsung Galaxy S III T-Mobile

Positioning - This field shows the positioning systems supported by the device. There are three main types: GPS, A-GPS and GLONASS. GPS - This is one of the most widespread global positioning technologies, developed and maintained by the U.S. government. It uses satellites in order to detect your location. Works best in clear weather. A-GPS - A-GPS stands for Assisted GPS and is the industry standard for positioning and navigation. “Assisted” means that it can use local wireless networks, in addition to satellites, for quicker and more precise localization. GLONASS - GLONASS is a global positioning system, developed by the Russian Federation. It’s very similar to GPS, but isn’t so popular in cell phones.

Samsung's elusive Galaxy S III finally announced!

After months of speculation, many blurry pictures and quite a lot of mystery later, Samsung has finally pulled the wraps off their next flagship handset, the Galaxy S III. The successor to the very popular Galaxy S II, the S III ups the ante, not only for Samsung, but Android smartphones in general and is currently the Android handset to get. Most of the rumours we’ve been hearing off late were indeed true while some weren't. The Galaxy S III was inspired by some elements in nature like earth, water and wind. The design is heavily inspired by pebbles which is reflected in the curved design. The phone measures just 8.6mm in thickness and weighs 133g, making it thin and light. The Galaxy S III will be available in 145 countries. The 3G version will be available by the end of May starting with Europe, Asia and  Africa while the 4G version will hit countries like Japan and South Korea later on.

One of the main features of the S III is the Siri-esque voice recognition system called S Voice. It features Smart Stay, a technique that uses the front facing camera to track your eye movement so it keeps the screen on as long as you're looking at it. Pretty cool. Social Tag uses face recognition that scans the faces in your gallery and maps them to your friends on Facebook or other social media sites. S Beam lets you bond and share data instantly between two S III devices using a combination of NFC and Wi-Fi Direct. AllShare Play uses DLNA to share your photos and videos on compatible TVs. Coming to the camera, it’s an 8MP shooter in the rear with a BSI sensor and a 1.9MP front facing camera. The camera also features new modes like Burst Mode and Best Buddy mode. The S III will have TouchWiz running on top of ICS so extra multimedia features like DivX playback is possible out-of-the-box.

The Galaxy S III definitely seems like a worthy successor of the S II and it does not disappoint. We, for one, can't wait to get our grubby hands on this beauty. The S III will go on sale on May 29 in Europe first followed shortly by a global release.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the specifications of the Galaxy S3:

Android 4.0 with TouchWiz

1.4 GHz quad-core Exynos 4212  processor

4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1280 x 720

8MP camera with AF, LED flash, BSI sensor and 1080p HD video recording

1.9MP front camera with a resolution of 720p for video chat

16/32/64GB Internal memory, expandable upto 64GB

1GB RAM

NFC, Wi-Fi, DLNA, GLONASS, micro-USB 2.0, HDMI, Bluetooth 4.0

2100 mAh battery

Galaxy S3 previewed in Samsung Kies database, two variants spotted

There has been a little back and forth regarding the name of the next Samsung Galaxy S flagship. Previous indications pointed that the brand would stick to the Roman numerals and launch the yet to be announced smartphone under the Galaxy S III moniker. However, a few short days ago, when the web was inundated with leaks about the next big smartphone to come out of the Korean brand, an app called the Samsung Unpacked Mobile 2012 revealed the name of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S smartphone with it being called the Galaxy S3. However, this was soon taken down, but as is the case with the Internet, when something is on it, it stays on it. This led many to believe that the handset will indeed be going by the Galaxy S3 branding. If there was any further confirmation required, Android Community has just provided it by showing the device in Samsung’s Kies database along with the market name, Galaxy S3.

The report states that the model number GT-19300 has also been associated with it. This was expected to be the model number of the Galaxy S3 so this may come as no real surprise. Apart from the GT-19300, the leaked screenshot also shows another model, GT-19300T which could indicate that it may be a variant of the smartphone for a different market or a radio signal such as GSM, CDMA or LTE. What comes as the most significant information from this image leak is that it features a thumbnail image of the upcoming handset. This is the first time there has been an official image leak of the handset and not the blurry cam or caught in the wild ones that have been making the rounds thus far. The other image leaks also may not have been the final version as it is believed that Samsung's used a different casing with the handset for testers so as to not leak the design of the handset.

While we cannot tell much from the image as it is merely a thumbnail, it is interesting as we can have a fair idea of what to expect on the 3rd of May 2012, when the Samsung Galaxy S3 gets officially unveiled.

Mobile Grudge Match - Samsung Galaxy S III vs HTC One X

Last night, we witnessed Samsung unveiling, what they have been referring to as the “the next big thing”, when they launched the Galaxy S III smartphone. While this is certainly exciting news for the mobile phone industry, the new handset got mixed reactions from fans and others, alike, who took to social networks, like Facebook and Twitter to share their opinions on the smartphone. The S III certainly has some unique features that we are looking forward to, like the Smart stay and some other ‘S’ branded features. We'll first come to the more pressing question at hand and that is - how does it stack up to the HTC One X? We recently pitted the One X against the iPhone 4S, but that was a bit of a one sided battle. Finally, though we now have a phone that rivals it on price, features and on the performance front, making it a true competitor.

Now, in the past, we included those phones in our matches that we tested and reviewed,  but today, we make an exception. We’ll be comparing both phones purely on the basis of the features and specifications and since some early benchmarks of the S III are already out, we can take that into account as well. So, let’s find out which handset offers one the most bang for buck.

Samsung Galaxy S III

Samsung’s marketing team are focusing heavily on the whole “inspired by nature” and “designed for humans” bit for the new S III. We will say this - it’s a good looking phone on the front and the sides, but the design is not ‘revolutionary’, as we had hoped it would be. It’s an evolution of the S II, more than anything else. One thing we really appreciate is that despite its super slim design, Samsung have still kept the battery removable and have shaved off as much of the bezel as possible, making it manageable. The HD Super AMOLED screen is great, but we wished they would have gone with the ‘Plus’ variant, instead. Connectivity wise, Samsung has you covered with everything, except the kitchen sink.

The rumoured 12MP camera didn’t make it to the final product, instead we get the same 8MP shooter, but with a BSI sensor to help with low light photography. The faster processor has also allowed them to add burst mode, which captures a series of snaps in quick succession, allowing the consumer to then select the best one out of the lot. We also have a Siri-like voice assistant that helps you automate mundane tasks. Samsung have shifted their focus on making the S III more intuitive and adaptable to your personal usage style. Whether they’ve succeeded or not, can only be determined once we have a go at it, so we’ll reserve our judgement on that till then. Overall, the S III might not be the ‘holy-grail’ everyone was waiting for, but it’s certainly a worthy successor of the S II. As for the design, that’s purely subjective, but I, for one, only have an issue with the rear of the phone, which looks way too bland and the arrangement of the LED flash and speaker grill just seem off. Ohh and, did we mention they are still using plastic for the entire body?

HTC One X

The HTC One X got off to a great start, with it being the only quad-core phone in the market. It enjoyed its time in the sunshine, that is, until we found out that its dual-core brethren in the U.S of A royally whoops its a**. This is also one of the reasons why HTC is delaying the One S in India. The U.S variant of the One X will eventually be available, internationally as the One XL, but we doubt if we’ll be seeing that anytime soon. What we loved about the One X is the way it’s put together. The polycarbonate shell feels strong and premium and it gives it a very nice feel, which is important to any handset. The screen may not be Super AMOLED, but the HD LCD 2 produces very good colours and since it’s a tiny bit smaller, the pixel count is more dense as well.

One of the party pieces of the One X is the new burst mode and the short time it takes to activate and capture a picture. The Tegra 3 SoC may not be the fastest in terms of CPU power, but when it comes to processing graphics, it’s clearly in a league of its own. The main issue when we reviewed (that’s hopefully fixed with the latest update) the phone was the battery life, which, given the larger fabrication process of the SoC, isn’t too good. Just like the S III, it’s also packed to the gills with features, so there’s only one way to tell, which is better, by heading over to the charts.

Let’s just clear up some of the doubts you’re probably having about the scores. Like we mentioned before, Super AMOLED may give you richer colours when it comes to accuracy, but the LCD 2 technology is better than the PenTile matrix used in the S III, as the sub-pixels are more densely packed. Also, Nvidia may have an upper hand when it comes to pure graphics performance, but Samsung’s SoC is built on the smaller 32nm fabrication, so it’s more power efficient and if the latest AnTuTu scores are anything to go by (where it beats the Transformer Prime, another Tegra 3 based device), then it should be faster than the One X in overall performance. The rest of it is pretty straightforward.

The bottom line

Samsung’s latest flagship comes across as a clear winner and we haven’t even included the unique features present in the S III, like Smart stay, S Voice, Smart alert and many more. We cannot say for certain without testing the S III, if it’s better than the One X or not, but all the evidence points to that. By the time the phone launches, i.e at the end of the month, the One X could get a price cut making it a very viable option. I guess it all boils down to how you feel from the moment you first hold the phone. After all, a mobile phone is a very personal device. We would recommend you get a feel of both devices before making the buying decision, since they are both very good handsets on paper; the rest is your personal taste.

"There will be a choice of a metallic blue or ceramic white finish and, for the first month, Vodafone will be the only network to offer both the 16GB and 32GB versions," it told TechRadar.

Orange chipped in with: "Orange UK is pleased to confirm that it will be ranging the new Samsung Galaxy SIII. More details on pricing and availability will be announced in due course."

And since then both Three and T-Mobile have all chimed in and confirmed they too will be offering up the Samsung Galaxy S3 on their networks too.

We're still waiting to hear all the information on the Samsung Galaxy S3 price from each network, but some information is dribbling in; and it's pretty good news.

Three was first up, letting us know that while it hasn't finalised all the prices, you'll be able to get the Galaxy S3 on its One Plan meaning loads of minutes, data and texts for just £34 per month.

Phones 4U will also let you have the phone for free, but it's £36 per month from the red, blue and white stores.

Vodafone is joining the £36 per month brigade, with 500MB of data and 1200 mins per month, and The Carphone Warehouse is ranging the S3 for £36 per month with all providers, and a bundle of accessories too for the early buyers.

To get the Samsung Galaxy S3 for free from O2 you'll need to pay £41 per month for 1GB of data and 600 minutes to boot... but it's still a hefty cost compared to the rest.

Apple denied Galaxy S III sales ban in us

U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose, California on Monday ended Apple’s hopes of stopping the upcoming launch of Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S III smartphone. The Cupertino-based company had pushed to get a court order blocking the June 21st launch, however Koh denied the injunction, Reuters reported. The judge claimed the case would overload her calendar, as she is overseeing Apple’s high-stakes trial against Samsung that is schedule to begin in July. Koh’s decision comes shortly after a federal judge tossed out Apple’s upcoming case against Google’s Motorola Mobility, marking another blow to the iPhone-maker’s aggressive and costly legal strategy.
